New Chapter in 2021

During 2020 i was invited by Martin Dewhurst, the Head Professional, to practise and play at GC Velden near to  Lake Wörth.

Martin has invited me to join him for the 2021 season to support the membership , guests and juniors. Lets see if we can get something going together.

I am looking forward to polishing up my teaching skills and plan to start on the 7th April. You can reach me on 0043 664 39 00 223

There will also be some playing opportunities this year , covid allowing.

"smash the grass"

What has happened in 2020 ?

Lets see if i can put my teaching experience to good use . There may be a need for a very experienced teaching and playing professional.

Maybe a few events such as the Austrian Senior Legends , seems to fit , the Senior Open in Sunningdale and the Staysure Senior PGA in Woburn, hopefully.

Pleased to say that the problem i had with my hands has now been dealt with successfully. clearly not helpful if you are a Professional Golfer.

I played a 54 hole event in the Algarve from the 8-10 of January. Pinheiros Altos and Laranjal, what great courses. There was also a 72 hole Pro Am from the 13-19 January on Quinta North and South, Pinheiros and San Lorenzo. All the courses were in great condition and the weather played its part with plenty of sunshine.

My team of 3 amateurs were Mike, Ray and Terry. Great guys who knew each other through business and love golf. It was scary that i was the oldest of the group and they were all retired. We met for the first time on the practise day and enjoyed 4 days of competitive golf together. Our team result was good , but not quite good enough for the prizes. Hopefully we can do it again next year ?

This was good preparation for the Seniors Q School at the Pestana resort from the 27-30 January. I had prepared well and felt good about my game, especially my weakness lately on the greens. Mostly from 6 foot in.

I shot level par and -9 was needed. Not good enough. It is amazing in golf how such small margins on and around the green can frustrate you and stop you challenging. So much is still strong in my game.

Enjoyed meeting Jean, Di and Derek for the Pro Am before Q school. Had some great laughs on the course. Keep swinging ladies! Nice to play with 3 Ams where i was again the youngest!

This year i will only play a few events. One of which i hope is the Austrian Seniors in Murhof in May. Hopefully with an invitation. It is called the Murhof Austrian Senior Legends. OK, i only meet three of those four words in the title.

Pehaps the Senior Open in July and the Staysure Senior PGA , hopefully in Woburn. Jersey may be played again, if they want the player who won it last time there, call me.

Will perhaps look to keep my hand in teaching. Maybe there is a club looking for an experienced professional on a part or full time basis. Lets see. Keep the options open. Enjoy the house , garden and summer is also a good option to consider.

"smash the grass"

So what is happening in 2019 ?

I have to be honest, 2018 was difficult. I was coming from a long way back after 7 months out of golf. Having to play, practise, and compete while taking medication did not help. Nobody waits for you to catch up!

Changed to a different medication in September and that reduced my tiredness, loss of strength, and lack of desire.

Returned to the Tour School in January and was feeling confident with my game. Unfortunately it did not quite go for me that week. Not good enough on the greens and a tendency to throw in stupid double bogeys.

That means only a few starts in 2019.

I have decided to work to keep my game , my mind, and my body strong, to give myself the best chance at the Tour School in January 2020. The desire is still there so lets do this for a few more years.

Medical Exemption to play the STAYSURE TOUR 2018

The Players Committee looked at my problem and were good enough to grant me what is called a "Medical Exemption"

As i could not play in 2017 and therefore was unable to earn a playing category for the 2018 season. Thankyou !

What was known as the European Senior Tour is now known as the STAYSURE Tour.Same idea but with a title sponsor.

After my problems in 2017 that stopped me from playing golf i am pleased to say things are looking  better.

Hoping to play the first event for me in Denmark at the beginning of June and then the Italian event near to home in Udine. I have 3 months to get my game to where i want it to be.

We will see if i can set the energy free that i need to get back to a really competitive level.

"smash the grass"

Unfortunately i am unable to play the Tour this year 2017. After the US Senior PGA the problem of an acute dermatitis/psoriasis on the palms of my hands makes it impossible to practise and play. This has been a problem since June 2016. I have of course sought professional help but it is not easy to treat. The friction and pressure on the hands created when practising and playing is not helpful at all. It can really flare up when practising for any length of time.

Think of my poor wife , she has me at home far more than expected.

Sorry darling !!!

The 2016 season was pretty good ,as i was able to win in Jersey/La Moye in a Playoff against Woosnam and Wolstenholme.

Further good results in Woburn 4th and Italy 5th capped a pretty steady year.I had a couple of injury worries, in my lower back and a dermatitis/psoriasis on the palms of my hands.

The 2015 European Seniors Tour finished in Mauritius with the MCB Tour Championship

Without doubt 2015 was my best year on the EST ! Winning in Switzerland / Bad Ragaz. Losing in a play off to Paul Broadhurst at Archerfield in Scotland when i was sure the title was mine !! Second in the British Seniors PGA at Close House / North England.

Gordon + Caddy Dan

My final position of 4th on the Order of Merit is something i am very proud to have achieved.

This allows me the to play in the US Seniors in Ohio in August. Six players from Europe are invited. That is the "Big Time"

Two other Senior Majors, the Senior Open in Carnoustie in July and the US Seniors PGA in Chicago in May.

How did it happen ? I was a little better on the greens , short game improved and after Close House, i really believed i was ready to win.

That little bit extra self belief enabled me to cross the winning line and join the "Winners Circle"  A great feeling, i have to admit!!

The five rounds i played, on the weekend of British Seniors, followed by the 3 days of the Swiss event were 23 under par. That helps !

The next step for me is to play to my potential in the 3 Majors i play this year. I want to feel as comfortable in these events as i do in a regular tour tournament.

You can follow my play this year on the EST "Live Scoring" i know a lot of people do. I can promise you one thing, the bogeys are not on purpose!!

Click on the "Senior Tour Logo" above for easy use.

The picture above is of me with my caddy Daniel, when we won in Switzerland last year. I am the little guy on the left with my weedy 6ft 2in + 100 Kilos ! That`s why he is called "Big Dan"
